The key to problem solving
Why do we meet? To solve a problem but how often does that happen?
We approach solving our problems from our viewpoint...why wouldn't we? The other person approaches solving the same problem from their viewpoint...why wouldn't they. What happens from here can take many turns for example:
- In Sales - Your customer and you are not on the same page.
- In Negotiations - You and the other person cannot agree.
- In Change Management - Management and your staff do not believe the new process or technology will work.
- In Customer Relationships - Customer believes you do not understand their problem.
- In Relationships - Angry at each other because they cannot agree.
What can you do to help your problem solving skills? Look at the same problem from their viewpoint.
I bet you are saying really that's it. I do that already and here is what I say "If i were you this is what I would do" ...If you were the other person you would do exactly what they did!.
What you really are saying is "If I were you I would do it the way I do it"
Here is technique to see a situation from many viewpoints:
- See yourself in your minds eye leaving your body moving to an observer position.
- Now in your minds eye ask yourself what is this other person saying to you but he/she is not hearing.
- Next in your minds eye see yourself looking at you with this information.
- What does this person want from this situation?
- Now come back into your body and ask yourself... what has changed about the situation?
You will now have new information so both of you can get a satisfactory result.
A wise man told me "You can measure wisdom by the number of perspectives you have"
